The program also highlights scholarship and fellowship recipients whose achievement reflects ABC’s long-standing investment in future leadership.

Icilma Fergus, MD

Icilma V. Fergus, MD is Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Cardiovascular Disparities at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital. Prior to that she served as Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Harlem Hospital Center for three years. Her undergraduate and graduate education were at Barnard College, Columbia University and SUNY Downstate. She completed her residency and Chief residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Dr. Fergus completed her cardiology fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical Center. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Barbara Hutchinson, MD, PhD

Position: Co-Chair

Barbara A. Hutchinson, MD is a highly regarded Cardiologist and Medical Director at de-novo site Flourish – Bowie, Maryland, with over three decades of experience in cardiovascular medicine and research. She is also the president of Chesapeake Cardiac Care. Hutchinson earned her MD from the University of Maryland and a PhD in Cardiovascular Pharmacology from Howard University, which uniquely qualify her to address complex cardiovascular conditions. She is board-certified in cardiovascular diseases and Sleep Medicine, with expertise in the critical relationship between sleep disorders and heart health. 

Throughout her career, Hutchinson, MD has made significant contributions to research and clinical practice, particularly in hypertension, heart failure, and obesity-related cardiovascular conditions. Her research has focused on advancing treatments for coronary artery disease and metabolic syndrome, which disproportionately affect obese and underserved populations. She is committed to addressing these disparities and has led clinical trials aimed at improving care and outcomes for patients from diverse backgrounds. 

Hutchinson MD’s leadership extends beyond the clinical setting. She has served as Board Chair and President of the Association of Black Cardiologists and continues to advocate for diversity in clinical trials. Her compassionate care, combined with her deep commitment to research and education, has earned her numerous accolades, including the Watkins-Saunders Award from the American Heart Association and recognition among Maryland’s Top 100 Women. She is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a member of the American Academy of Cardiovascular Sleep Medicine, and currently sits on several medical advisory and non-profit boards.

Samin Sharma, MD, PhD

A globally-renowned expert in Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Samin K. Sharma is the Director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Institute, SVP of Operations & Quality, Director of Interventional Cardiology, and President of the Mount Sinai Heart Network. He is an expert in performing the highest number of complex coronary interventions (over 1600+ cases/year) in the U.S. while maintaining a very high success rate, very low complications & specializes in TAVR/MitraClip procedures. Dr. Sharma earned his MD from S.M.S. Medical College in Jaipur, India, in 1978 and his MD in Medicine in 1982. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the NY Infirmary-Beekman Downtown Hospital (1986). Then his Cardiology Fellowship at Elmhurst Hospital (1988) & Interventional Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital (1990). Dr. Sharma has authored over 750 articles & abstracts, 15 book chapters, 3 books & hosts a monthly live web on interventional disease management (over 18,000 participants in 176 countries).

Sandra Bookman is the co-anchorfor “Eyewitness News”at noon. She joined the team in 1998 as a reporterand thenquickly becameweekend anchor. Additionally, shehas hosted the weekly public affairs show“Here and Now”since 2013, acontinuationof“Like It Is with Gil Noble,”a pioneering program forAfrican Americanaudiences.Before working at WABC-TV, Bookman served as the weekend anchor at WSB-TV, an ABC affiliate in Atlanta for nine years.Prior to joining WSB-TV, she held weekend anchor positionsat WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina,and KFDM-TV in Beaumont, Texas.She served seven years reporting on theOlympics, covering major events prior toAtlanta winningthe bid through the 1996 bombing, as well as the 1992 Barcelona games. Her international reporting includes coverage from South Africa after Nelson Mandela’s release in 1990.Bookman has received three local Emmy®Awards and recognition for her Olympic coverage and reporting on the ValueJet Airlines crash. In addition to her anchoring duties, shealso participates in various community events.
